Cyber's products were live on mainnet, integrated with the Cyber ecosystem, and offered features like SmartGas—a pre-paid gas deposit to cover transaction fees.

But the closure reveals a hidden assumption: that the frontend will always be there. When the frontend is removed, the smart contract remains, but the user's ability to interact with it collapses. The technical team at Cyber stated that after the deadline, users must interact directly with the underlying smart contracts—no support, no guides, no interface. This is a gulf between the promise of self-custody and the reality of dependency.

Core: The Anatomy of a Broken Exit

Let's decode the technical details. The two wallets have different withdrawal paths:

  • CyberWallet: Users must withdraw to a designated 'signer wallet'—a separate EOA that was authorized during setup. The SmartGas balance cannot be withdrawn; instead, eligible users receive Surf vouchers as compensation.
  • Cyber Passkey Wallet: Users must transfer assets directly to an external EOA. No SmartGas option exists because Passkey Wallet likely deducts fees from the main asset balance.

This distinction is critical. The signer wallet approach implies that CyberWallet's smart contract recognizes a specific signer address as the authorized controller. If a user loses access to that signer, they are locked out. The Passkey Wallet, on the other hand, relies on WebAuthn authentication—a service that may be deactivated once Cyber shuts down its backend. Without the verification service, the passkey becomes useless.

But the CyberWallet shutdown exposes a counter-intuitive truth: many AA wallets are not truly self-custodial. They depend on centralized services—frontend interfaces, passkey verification servers, paymaster contracts—that are outside the user's control.

If the passkey verification server goes down, the user's passkey becomes a digital artifact with no signing power. If the frontend is removed, the user loses the ability to construct the correct transaction. The smart contract may still be there, but the user is isolated from it. This is not the same as an EOA where the private key is the sole gatekeeper.
