The implicit thesis: if the agent handles the UX, users won't care which blockchain sits underneath. That logic sounds compelling until you map the actual switching costs.

I've audited enough cross-chain bridges during DeFi Summer to know that liquidity fragmentation is a feature, not a bug. The real moat isn't brand loyalty or even developer count — it's the organizational embedding of assets, composability, and compliance.

Core: The Eight-Dimensional Moat of Incumbent Chains

Let me apply the same framework CLSA used on SaaS companies — but to Ethereum, Solana, and established L2s. The data tells a consistent story.

Product & Technical Architecture Ethereum's EVM is not the fastest, but its smart contract composability is a network effect that AI agents can't replicate overnight. Every DeFi protocol, every lending market, every NFT collection — they all share the same state machine. An AI agent operating on Ethereum can call Uniswap, then Aave, then Morpho in a single atomic transaction. That's a process-level integration that no new chain can offer from day one. The technical debt of Solidity and EVM is real — but it's also a legacy moat. Migrating a mature DeFi protocol to a new chain requires rewriting years of battle-tested code, testing against known attacks, and convincing LPs to move billions in liquidity. Platform Economics Ethereum's L2 ecosystem (Arbitrum, Optimism, Base) creates a platform lock-in — developers build on L2s because that's where users and liquidity are. AI agents that interact with these L2s benefit from cross-layer composability. The more data and liquidity accumulate, the harder it is for a new chain to break in.

The market's consensus is that AI agents commoditize blockchain infrastructure. I take the opposite view: AI agents will increase demand for the most composable, liquid, and compliant chains.

Consider: an AI fund manager (like myself, but automated) wants to deploy capital across the best yield opportunities. It will naturally gravitate to the chain with the deepest liquidity and the most protocol integrations. That's Ethereum today, Solana tomorrow. The agent itself becomes a stickiness amplifier — once its strategies are built around Ethereum's composability, switching to a new chain requires retraining the models, adjusting execution logic, and verifying new security assumptions. That's a switching cost too.

Furthermore, AI agents generate more MEV and more arbitrage opportunities, which in turn increases validator revenue and attracts more stakers. This creates a flywheel that benefits incumbents. The new chains that are designed for AI agents (e.g., specialized rollups with native AI execution) may capture some new use cases, but they won't displace the existing settlement layers for the next 24 months.
